Once a year, or twice I must make a pilgrimage back to the land of Q...  that mystical place where hickory smoke fills the air, where BBQ is not just a food group, but a way of life, that place is Kansas City!   I love Nashville but to come back home to visit family and friends is always great to especially when there is a new addition to the family- my new great nephew Robert Ethan born in August, he is a butterball right now, L'il Ethan even thought my baby talk was funny and didn't cry, so all is good in baby land!

When back in KC I always try to visit my favorite bbq mecca- Jack Fiorella's Jackstack BBQ, this is where it all started for me and gave me my love of BBQ.  My family use to go there for family dinners and then as now, BBQ is about enjoying family, friends and great food.   Jack Stack is unique in that it casual fine dining BBQ. A great wine list, every type of rib- beef, pork, lamb, smoked seafood and the best brisket burnt ends- for those that don't know what burnt ends are they are chunked pieces of brisket with a nice charred outter layer from the point/butt or thickest part of the brisket- it's a real art to do these right.  Check this out for more information on brisket:  www.virtualweberbullet.com/brisketselect.html

Another favorite place to visit is Smoke 'N Fire-  the BBQ superstore, this store has every bbq accessories  grill, smoker you could imagine.  I don't like shopping till I get in to this man store, you just can't have enough tools of the trade- like a pig tail meat flipper or a towel that says "Serial Griller"!

It's just a few days before Thanksgiving, a time to be thankful for the blessings God has given us over the past year.

I enjoy catering Weddings they are a very happy time in the lives of two people that have such optimism for the future.  We had the privilege of catering the wedding of Chris and Kim in Ashland City, TN  on Saturday.

If there was ever a wedding tailor made for BBQ this was it.  Mind you we have done very formal weddings and served BBQ to the delight of people from the city or country attending, but sometimes it seems like Chris and Kim  were having a wedding just so BBQ could be served, doubt that was the case, but like to think so just a little bit!   They  were married on their land, just a stone throw from their incrediable log cabin home near a scenic creek with bon fires and  torches along a trail to lead the way to the creek. Their house was a log cabin made from timbers of a church from the 1880s and had the right touch of modern with the sentimal of the yester years.

We pulled our custom made 9ft smoker down a winding country lane, the setting was  perfect for the event with the hickory smoke and smell of pulled pork, potato bake and more waifing in the cool evening air.   Inside the warm cozy cabin was a blue grass band that was exceptional.  You could imagine how it might have been in the late 1800's- except for the specially printed koozies for the adult beverages, which were a hoot!    Both Chris and Kim are young upscale professionals that love the outdoors,  people and enjoy having a good time, with a love for rustic sentimental  things.   We so appreciated being part of this event in this special time of their life and wish them the best.

The Titans are 10-0 and for the 2nd time this year have beat the Jacksonville Jags.  I think a friend of mine A R Baker, owes me a plate of Burnt Ends- for those not familar those are beef brisket that has been cooked with a nice burnt crust and chunked- we have a raging debate if my favorite bbq restaurant- Jack Stacks in Kansas City or Rendezous in Memphis is better. That is still to be settled, but the fact is on this day the Titans are 10-0 and have beat his hometown Jags for the 2nd time..... Mr Baker I believe you owe me some BBQ!  A R Baker is very talented man that has traveled as an actor with Broadway shows such as Annie, Actor on TV, commercials, radio voice overs, etc.. and I hope in the coming months put audio files of a project we did a few years back called BBQ Travel- where we did takes on BBQ and food in a informative and comical way.   If there is BBQ to be found in a city A R is the man to  find it- if you need to find out where to go to eat in Cleveland, or Santa Monica, Seattle or Pittsburgh, or anywhere in between, A R is the man!

You realize that even in the low tech world of BBQ, that the Brave New World of Technology invades every area of our life, I think that's why I enjoy cooking BBQ so much, its a very primal way of cooking with fire, how our ancestors did it centuries ago.

They say that what you did as a child is probably what you should be doing as an adult,  unless it was illegal or immoral of course.  My passion has been fire- played with matches and didn't wet the bed, I did catch a field on fire tho and remember camping out with cousins and baking a cake in a fire- you know that was tasty!

Growing up in Kansas City, I assumed every city had great BBQ joints on every street corner, you know those places with wood stacked high, hickory smoke bellowing out to tickle the taste buds, something so very American about BBQ that no other food can compare.  Nashville has caught the craze in the past 5 years and even Brisket is now know in the South.

But to those in the North when I say BBQ and Coke, I possibly mean Pork and a drink- maybe coke, maybe not and for darn sure you don't call it pop in most of the red states that voted for McCain.  I'm curious as to the BBQ vote was McCain probably into Tri Tip where Obama being from Chicago enjoyed wet ribs and that determined the outcome?   Maybe a blue stater out there could tell me. This I know Palin probably could have downed a plate of BBQ Moose with an adult beverage faster than either of one of those psuedo mavericks. Palin 2012- sounds like a Rush album- yes album not CD or Mp3 for those not old enough to know that there use to be real artwork with music.

I hope that you find our new site informative as well as interesting, as I embark on my new adventure of creating the new home for Light My Fire BBQ.
